Then I had to authenticate on the phone to trust the computer. It said it could not connect to the iPhone unless it downloaded some mysterious update first, which it did with an unmarked small dialog box with a black phone icon inside it. Told it to update to 11.3 via System Preferences. After updating my iPhone to 14.5, I had left it plugged into the Mac Mini. But it could have been a fluke via a bug. However, on a different M1 Mac Mini (same hardware as the first, same NVME external drives), I was able to actually update to 11.3 directly from the external boot drive. Except this time I couldn’t update the internal boot drive either, so I couldn’t test an update attempt from the Diagnostic boot partition. #Little snitch m1 install#The install downloaded but would not authenticate to restart to do the update. One external boot drive on an M1 Mac Mini again refused to update in place, 11.3 making no difference. My primary interest continues to be getting external M1 boot drives to function as normally as they used to under Intel processors. It’s been a long day, updating every iOS device in a multi-person home as well as every Apple TV and every Mac. If something hasn’t changed, that’s surprising.
